Big first day set at men’s week of ASB Classic
There are eight Top 25 players in this year’s ASB Classic in Auckland, led by World No. 7 David Ferrer, who took a wild card into the draw after a first round loss in Doha. The 33-year-old Spaniard is a four-time champion in Auckland (2007, 2011-13). Rounding out the seeds are: No. 2 Jo-WilfriedTsonga, No. 3 John Isner, No. 4 Kevin Anderson, No. 5 Benoit Paire, No. 6 Fabio Fognini, No. 7 IvoKarlovic and No. 8 Roberto Bautista Agut. There are three other former winners in the field: defending champ JiriVesely, two-time titleholder John Isner (2010, 2014) and Philipp Kohlschreiber (2008).
It’s a big opening day of the ASB Classic with six main draw men’s singles matches being played, including four on Centre court (three in the day session). In the first match, American Donald Young takes on local kiwi wildcard Finn Tearney who is making his main draw debut.
Next up on centre court is another America, Steve Johnson who plays Australian qualifier Matthew Barton, who is also making his tour debut.
In the final day session match Victor Estrella Burgos of the Dominican Republic meets American number two Jack Sock.
Heading into the evening session Canadian Vasek Pospisil meets last year’s leading ace scorer Ivo Karlovic of Croatia for their first meeting. This is the first time in Auckland for both players.
Finishing up the evening session is the doubles top seeds Juan Sebastian Cabal and Robert Farah of Colombia who are the top seeds. They will face the New Zealand wildcard duo of Marcus Daniell and Artem Sitak.
