Today’s ASB Classic Watch
DAY 10 PREVIEW: For 20 years tournament directors asked Richard Gasquet to play here in Auckland, and for 20 years he always said no.
But late last year the veteran Frenchman answered the call of new tournament director Nicolas Lamperin and agreed to play in Auckland for the first time. And Gasquet has emerged as one of the stars of this year’s ASB Classic and is through to today’s the quarter finals.
Gasquet is a genuine superstar, having spent two decades in the top 100 and much of his career in the top 20. The 35-year-old Frenchman, who reached a career high of world number 7 in 2007, has won 15 ATP singles titles. He’s been in three Grand Slam semi-finals, two at Wimbledon and once at the US Open.
One of the few players to play with a single-handed backhand it's an exquisite sight in full flow. He exudes elegance on the court and is currently fourth on the list of active players on Tour with over 580 wins.
