New Zealander and doubles specialist Artem Sitak won wildcards into the main draw of the men’s singles and doubles at the ASB Classic. Sitak beat New Zealand no. 2 Finn Tearney to win the Pascoes New Zealand Championships in December, and in doing so was rewarded with a wildcard for the men’s singles at the ASB Classic. The 30-year-old won the national tournament with an upset win over Tearney 6-2 6-0. Sitak put on a masterclass with an aggressive performance and few unforced errors. It was Sitak’s third national singles title but it will be his first appearance in the main draw of the singles at the ASB Classic. Sitak had a dream day taking out the national doubles title after the singles. Ranked 62 in the world in doubles, he paired with world no. 50 Marcus Daniell to beat Ben Mclachlan and Finn Tearney 6-1 6-4. The result means both players will get a wildcard into the main draw of the ASB Classic men’s doubles. In 2016 the Kiwi captured his third ATP World Tour doubles title at Stuttgart again playing with countryman Daniell. He advanced to the semi-finals with Daniell at the 2016 ASB Classic and in Istanbul. Sitak also won Challenger titles in 2016 with Daniell at Puebla and San Luis Potosi in Mexico. Sitak started playing tennis at 6 years old and speaks six languages.
