Kirsten Flipkens is a Belgian tennis player who has reached 13 in the world. She has finished the 2016 season in the top 100 for the seventh time in 8 years. She had an impressive result at the Rio Olympics. She beat American Venus Williams 4-6 6-3 7-6 in the first round and reached the round of 16. On her way to the semi-finals of Mallorca, she also had an impressive win over world number 4 Garbine Muguruza. The only WTA title Flipkens has won came in 2012 in Quebec City. Flipkens has visited Auckland every year since 2013. She reached the quarter-finals in 2013 and semi-finals in 2014. She won five games in a row in the 2016 tournament to make her way through qualifying into the quarter-finals where she lost to fellow qualifier Tamira Paszek. In 2012, she developed life-threatening blood clots, which drastically reduced her ranking. Her comeback led to her best grand slam performance at the 2013 Wimbledon Championships, where she reached the semi-final, losing to the eventual champion, Marion Bartoli. On 22 December 2013, she won the award for Sportswoman of the Year in Belgium.
