19-year-old Jelena Ostapenko returns to the ASB Classic after reaching a career high ranking of 34 in June 2016. Her exceptional year has been acknowledged by the WTA with the Latvian nominated for the 2016 Newcomer of the Year. Ostapenko had notable wins on the tour in 2016, beating Caroline Wozniacki in the New Haven WTA tour in August and world no. 11 Petra Kvitova in Birmingham in June. She reached the final of the Doha WTA tournament in February beating top 20 players Svetlana Kuznetsova and Kvitova. In the 2016 ASB Classic she beat Swede Johanna Larsson, before losing in the round of 16 to Brit Naomi Broady. The Latvian is the former world number two junior and only played her first WTA main draw in 2014. She was crowned the Wimbledon Junior Champion in 2014 and was granted a wild card into the main draw for tournament in 2015. She knocked out top ten player Carla Suarez Navarro in the opening round. She backed up her Wimbledon shock performance with a second round appearance at the US Open falling before losing to Sara Errani. Her strong Grand Slam performances earned her a ranking inside the top 100 in 2015. She is coached by her mother Jelena Jakovleva.
