Joao Sousa is regarded as the greatest Portuguese tennis player of all time, and has been in the ATP singles top-100 rankings since July 2013 and reached a career high ranking of 28 in May 2016. In 2016 he advanced to the quarterfinals at the ATP Masters in Madrid for the first time before losing to Rafael Nadal. He broke a 21-match losing streak against top 10 players by beating world no. 5 Kei Nishikori in Tokyo in October. He also defeated world no. 20 Kevin Anderson en route to the semi-finals in Nice. He reached the third round at the Australian Open, Wimbledon an US Open. He has played in Auckland in 2012, 2015 and 2016. He holds a number of Portuguese tennis records including his career high ranking of 28, and he became the first player to break into the singles top 50. He has won two ATP World Tour titles, at Kuala Lumpur in 2013 and the 2015 Valencia Open.
