The two-time Grand Slam champion and former world No.2, lost to Peng in the second round in Auckland this year but went on to reach the fourth round at the Australian Open. Svetlana Kuznetsova eventually lost to French Open champion Francesca Schiavone in the longest Grand Slam match in history in Melbourne.
With 13 singles titles and 14 doubles titles to her credit, the Russian’s best result of the year was a quarterfinal effort at Roland Garros.
Kuznetsova first hit the tennis headlines in 2003 when she reached the quarterfinals at Wimbledon, before collecting the US Open title the following year. Her other Grand Slam title was the French Open in 2009.
