Taylor Fritz is the ATP’s Star of Tomorrow, an award reserved for the player that the Tour believes will be the face of tennis in years to come. The 19-year-old American is the youngest player in the top 100 and wasn’t born when Roger Federer played his first ATP tournament in 1997. Currently ranked 77, he reached a career-high ranking of 53 in August. The teenager is one of only nine players to have won multiple Challenger level events. He is in good company, sharing the record with Rafael Nadal, Novak Djokovic, Juan Martin del Potro, Richard Gasquet, Tomas Berdych and Bernard Tomic. The US Open boys' champion has enjoyed a meteoric rise over the past 13 months, soaring from 694 in the rankings to crack the top 100 at 18 years old. His debut year on tour saw him win 15 tour-level matches, a statistic that includes quarterfinals in Acapulco and Atlanta. His best result came at the Memphis Open in February, where he became the youngest American to reach an ATP World Tour final since Michael Chang in 1989. Fritz had two 5-set epics in Grand Slams in 2016 against ASB Classic finalist Jack Sock. In the Australian Open, Sock beat Fritz in the first round 6-4, 3-6, 0-6, 6-3, 6-4. The Americans drew each other first round again in Wimbledon where Sock won in a 3.5-hour epic 7-6(3) 7-5 3-6 1-6 6-4. At 6 feet, 4 inches tall, Fritz is armed with a rocket serve likened to his idol, Pete Sampras and booming groundstrokes. He has a close relationship with Sampras who gave him a birthday cake on his 18th birthday at a tournament in Mexico.
