Ana Konjuh aims for Top 50
Wildcard Ana Konjuh had a convincing win against Mona Barthel on Monday night. We had a short Q&A with her to talk about the match, and the goals she's setting herself :
“Mona Barthel is a good player, I’ve never played her before, so I was a bit surprised. I think maybe she wasn’t in good shape today, but I gave my best.”
We saw you 12 months ago on the first Monday night. You had a great win against Roberta Vinci and you’ve done it again against Mona Barthel.
“I feel great here. It’s a great tournament, I’m pleased to be back and it feels like home. I have my Croatians here for support."
How much do you feel you’ve grown as a player in the last 12 months since you’ve been here?
“Well, I had elbow surgery after the Australian Open, so I lost my self-confidence at that time. I hadn’t played for four months, and to come back was tough, to come back and play with such great players again, I had to get used to it. I’m happy that I gave my best and I did it in a very short time and I’m really happy to be here, it’s a great start to the season. I came about a week ago, a bit earlier, to prepare.”
What are your goals for the coming year, and how are you coping with the expectation, because a lot of people are still talking about you as a very promising young player?
“I want to finish the year in the Top 50. There is that pressure but it feels good to be compared to such great players, and to have that expectation, it motivates you, so I love it. I’m much more experienced that I was a year ago, I played against such good players, I have those number of matches behind me and hopefully I will do good.”
