Benoit Paire, a rising French star

Benoit Paire started his 2014 campaign in Chennai. After receiving a bye in the first round, the Frenchman defeated Guillermo Garcia-Lopez before losing to world No. 38 Marcel Granollers in a third-set tie-break in the Quarterfinals.

Paire’s best showing in Auckland was in 2012 when he came through qualifying to reach the quarterfinals before losing in a third-set tie-break to Olivier Rochus. Last year he lost in the first round to Yen-Hsun Lu.

Paire improved his year-end ranking for the sixth year in succession in 2013, finishing No. 26 with a personal-best 32-match wins. He has now finished the past three seasons in the top 100, top 50 and top 30.

The 24-year-old was one of 11 Frenchman to appear in the top 100 of the Emirates ATP Rankings. France was the second most-represented nation in the top 100. Spain led the way with 14.

Benoit Paire is playing his first round match today. He will be facing Michal Przysiezny (POL).
