Dazzling Day 1
Men’s week started off with plenty of sunshine, world class tennis and incredible bites.
The crowd was treated to outstanding tennis throughout the day with a close match between four-time champion David Ferrer and up and comer, Wu Yibing. The young Chinese player fought his way back during the first set pushing Ferrer to a tie breaker.
Both players came out firing in the second set for what turned into a two- hour battle with Ferrer coming out on top 76(7) 64.
Kiwi wild card and hometown hero, Michael Venus, took on fifth seed Roberto Bautista Agut to kick off our Monday Night Session. Bautista Agut sailed through in straight sets taking the 62 61 win.
Next on Centre Stage was wonder kid, Denis Shapovalov, making his debut in Auckland against qualifier Rogerio Dultra Silva. Shapovalov dazzled under the lights and capped the first day of Men's Main Draw play with a 63 62 victory.
Tomorrow's lineup brings more exceptional matches for fans to enjoy! Don't miss closely matched Steve Johnson take on fellow American Ryan Harrison. Then, be sure to make your way back from The Serve in time to catch Michael Venus and Raven Klaasen take on Wesley Koolhof and Artem Sitak in doubles.
