Erakovic and Puig team up for first time
Kiwi number one Marina Erakovic, and new doubles partner, Puerto Rican, Monica Puig are facing Argentinian Maria Irigoyen and Czech BarboraKrejcikova in their first doubles match-up tonight. They also face a difficult challenge in their first round of the singles draw, being forced to play against each other for the first time.
While Puig is ranked 17 places higher than Erakovic at 59th in the world, Erakovic is a favourite in Auckland and has the home-court advantage. Erakovic says playing against your doubles partner happens more than you think, but they’ll remain friends whatever the outcome and she’ll approach the game like any other match.
Though the ASB Classic has sometimes proven a difficult start to the year for the 77th ranked Erakovic, her best result coming in 2008 when she reached the semi-finals, she’s entering this tournament hoping to continue the progress she’s made over the past few months, and with a positive frame of mind.
The match will be second up in the night session.
