First Day of ASB Classic delights fans

The ASB Classic kicked off with a bang yesterday, with one of the most exciting evening sessions organisers and fans could have hoped for- Czech Republic's, Andrea Hlaváčková versus tournament drawcard, Venus Williams.

After a solid first set, Hlaváčková put up a good fight in the second, but it was Williams who took the win, with a 6-3, 7-6 result. Hlaváčková joined the tournament off the back of an impressive 2013 doubles season, but was unable to translate that momentum last night.

Williams now progresses to the second round, taking to centre court again on Wednesday 1 January.

Other results from the day included Jamie Hamptons' win over Tamira Paszek, Garbine Muguruza's defeat of Christina McHale, and a doubles win for Ana Ivanovic and Kirsten Flipkens.
