Kiwi Statham stuns Chung
Kiwi Rubin Statham has played the match of his career in front of a packed home crowd, stunning 6th seed and world number 25 Hyeon Chung to advance to the second round of the ASB Classic.
Chung was leading 5-1 in the first set before Statham clawed his way back and snapped up the first set 7-5. As Statham lifted his game, the crowd cheered louder, and the momentum was clearly in favour of the local lad. Statham who turned pro more than ten years ago stayed in the moment, composed himself and grabbed the biggest win of his career winning 7-5 6-3.
The Kiwi wildcard is stoked to play so well in front of the Auckland tennis fans.
“It’s a very unique environment. It’s very intimate, they are with you literally on the court. And so yeah there is a little bit more pressure but there is also an energy behind you and a good following, so when you start playing well, they really get behind you and to be able to play in front of fans and family who have been supporting me throughout the years, it’s been really special. “
