Meet the Wildcards : Borna Coric, Michael Venus & Reuben Statham
This year’s Heineken Open welcomes three wildcards – 17-year-old Croatian young gun, Borna Coric, New Zealand number one, Michael Venus, and fellow Kiwi, Reuben Statham.
Coric has had a stellar season, beating multiple Grand Slam champion, Rafael Nadal at Basel in October, and was the first 17-year-old to break into the World 100 since 2004. He goes up against World number 49 Pablo CarrenoBusta in the first round.
Michael Venus has had a great last year in the doubles, reaching the third round in the Australian and US Opens, and hopes to improve his singles ranking this year. If he gets past the first round, he’ll come up against the tournament’s fourth seed, Tommy Robredo in the second. Reuben Statham is our other local hopeful, and could face fifth seed Santiago Giraldo if both players make it through the first round.
