Monfils withdraws from ASB Classic
Gael Monfils has unfortunately withdrawn from the 2019 ASB Classic due to injury.
In a press conference this afternoon, Monfils explained how he chose not to play the first week of the season, arrived early into the Southern Hemisphere and was committed to playing this year's 2019 ASB Classic. However, yesterday during practice he felt a pain in his quad which progressively got worse.
"I'm disappointed about the situation I put myself through and the tournament...I was super excited to come here, I came here on Saturday. I love the city. The fans are always great and it was great to see Karl (tournament director) again. It was a tough decision for me today to say that I'm not playing."
Monfils will be replaced by lucky loser Pablo Cuevas. Cuevas was the 6th seed in 2018 and will take on Ugo Humbert in tomorrow's evening session.
