Seeded players challenged in today’s semifinals

In the first semifinal third seed Yanina Wickmayer was forced to battle until the very end with eighth seed Mona Barthel. It came down to a tiebreak in the third set after Wickmayer won the first 6-4 and Barthel the second 6-1.

The weather conditions made today’s match especially tough with Wickmayer commenting:

“The wind was really strong and when she (Barthel) was serving a bit slower the wind was taking the ball which was really tough to read and tough to get a rhythm going. But I guess the wind affected the both of us and the sun on one side was hard for the both of us too, we didn’t see anything.”

Agnieszka Radwanska did not have an easy match either. World no. 71 Jamie Hampton gave the world no.4 a run for her money. Radwanska won in straight sets but both sets came down to a tiebreak 7-6 7-6. The top seed admitted that the weather today was tough for her too, but she was happy to be through to the final of the first tournament of the year.

Julia Goerges and Yaroslava Shvedova were dominant in today’s doubles semifinal against Julie Coin and Marie-Eve Pelletier. The singles stars took the win in straight sets 6-4 6-1 and will meet multiple Grand Slam doubles champion Cara Black and her partner Anastasia Rodionova in tomorrow’s final
