Sloane Stephens 2016 ASB Classic Champion

22 year old American Sloane Stephens has taken the title at the 2016 ASB Classic, defeating German Julia Goerges in two sets (7-5, 6-2).

Earlier in the day Stephens had to overhaul 2015 runner-up and third seed Caroline Wozniacki in the semi-final which was split in two sessions with play abandoned on Friday evening because of rain where Stephens had the edge with a lead in the first set of 5-2. When play resumed today Wozniacki fought back in the first set, but Stephens was too strong and closed in on her first 2016 title. This is her second WTA title overall after taking a win in Washington DC last year.

Stephens has indicated she is keen to return again in 2017 to defend her title.

The doubles final took place later with Elise Mertens and An-Sophie Mestach defeating Danka Kovinic and Barbora Strycova 2-6, 6-3, 10-5.
