Strongest ever men’s qualifying field for ASB Classic

With the main draw cut off being so high, it’s no wonder the ASB Classic men’s qualifying field is the strongest it’s ever been.

At 59 in the world German Peter Gojowczyk will be top seed in the draw, but it’s the depth of the field that has Tournament Director Karl Budge super excited.

“We have ten players in the top 100, that’s unbelievable. In fact, that’s the main draw of an ATP 250 event. We have players like, American Tennys Sandgren who made the quarter-final of the Australian Open this year, beating two top ten players, Dominic Thiem and Stan Wawrinka and German powerhouse Maximilian Marterer who reached the round of 16 at Roland Garros.”

Many of the field have hit their career best rankings this season, including Gojowczyk (39), Sandgren (47) and Michael Mmoh (96) who at 20 years old broke inside the top 100 in October. The young American played several challenger events this year, winning two of them and advancing to the two ATP quarter-finals in Los Cabos and Brisbane.

Ex pat Kiwi Cameron Norrie also produced his best season on tour this year, reaching 66 in the world in August. Norrie reached two ATP quarter-finals (Shenzhen, Eastbourne) and three ATP semi-finals (Los Cabos, Atlanta and Lyon). The 23-year old who only turned pro last year, beat his first top ten player this year as well, world number ten John Isner in Lyon.

“It will be awesome to have Cam get a chance to play in front of what still is his home crowd.  He is a kiwi through and through that grew up here in Auckland until leaving for college.  He has had a huge year beating two former ASB Classic champions in Isner and Bautista and I’m looking forward to seeing him play”.

Kiwi Finn Tearney will receive a wild card for qualifying after winning the NZ Champs over the weekend.

The men’s qualifying tournament will start on Saturday 5th January and run over three days. Ground passes are on sale online at Ticketek  so Aucklanders will be able to enjoy some world class tennis for next to nothing!
