That's a wrap! Day 1 Highlights

Day One of the ASB Classic was full of great food, live entertainment, a little rain and of course world class tennis!

Today we saw our four qualifiers decided, Jana Fett, Sachia Vickery, Ysaline Bonaventure and Viktoria Kuzmova making it through to the main draw but the big action on court came in the evening. 8th seed Donna Vekic and Kirsten Flipkens went toe to toe after a two-hour rain delay, Flipkens winning the first set and Vekic pulling her back in the second. In the end, Flipkens outlasted her higher ranked opponent to win the match 76(5)36 64 and move through to the second round.

The most anticipated match of the day lived up to its hype, despite their late start second seed Julia Goerges and Rio Olympic Gold Medallist Monica Puig delivered in front of the loyal crowd. The two big hitters came out firing with Puig getting the early lead. However, it was the German number one who stayed composed and snapped up the first set. Both players held serve in the second set until Puig broke Goerges in the tenth game to grab the second set. The final set saw the experience and heavy hitting of Goerges run away with the victory 64 46 62.

With a brighter forecast for Day Two, all postponed matches will continue and tennis fans can enjoy watching two former champions, top seed Caroline Wozniacki and our own local kiwi talent.

It’s going to be a cracker!
