Three Americans in the quarter-final

Three Americans in the quarter-final

Today marks the first time since 1988 that three Americans have appeared in the quarter-final in Auckland. Former champion  John Isner is joined in the final eight by Lucky Loser Steve Johnson, who won back-to-back matches on Wednesday, and Jack Sock, who posted the highest-ranked win of his career when he took down world No. 12 Tommy Haas in the round 16. In 1988, the three Americans to reach this point were Jim Pugh, Jim Grabb and Dan Goldie. Of the three, just Pugh advanced to the semi-final before losing to Indian Ramesh Krishnan. If Johnson and Sock are to emulate Pugh, they will need to overcome Yen-Hsun Lu and Roberto Bautista Agut respectively.
