Townsend relishing possible Wozniacki match-up
Taylor Townsend beat out the 2010 ASB Classic Champion, Yanina Wickmayer 7-5, 3-6, 6-0 in the first round. It sets up the possibility of a match with top seed Caroline Wozniacki, should she make it past qualifier Julia Glushko on Tuesday night. Townsend spoke enthusiastically with us following her first win :
“I’m really happy with today, there were a lot of ups and downs. I fought back from 4-1 in the first set, so that was really good, I’m just really happy that I was able to fight through it, and I was fighting through a lot of different things, nerves, myself, some of the new stuff that I’d been working on. I’m just glad that I was able to pull it all together and come out with the win.
Your confidence obviously started growing in that sixth game, you started to pull out in the first set.
“It wasn’t really that my confidence started to come, it was just that I decided to play. I wasn’t going to worry about the mistakes that I made or what I wasn’t doing. I was just going to focus on the good things that I was doing and just try to build on that. That obviously worked and that carried over into a positive third set."
How would you explain the third set and your dominance?
"I just think it was a matter of focus. It was a matter of me focusing on myself and not worrying about the mistakes that I made. I was just trying to focus on one point at a time and compete point to point to point, and that’s all I did. If I made a mistake I just tried to fix it on the next one, or tried to do whatever I didn’t do better in the next point. I was just worried about the next point, not what I did in the past. That’s really all that happened. I wasn’t focusing on my technique or what I was or was not doing, I was just trying to focus on that point and the ball that was in front of me."
What are the things you want to improve on going into the next round?
"I just want to build on the whole match. I can’t just look at the third set, I have to look at the match as a whole. I did a lot of good things, but there are definitely some things I can improve on. It’s a matter of confidence, hitting my shots confidently, coming to the net confidently. Continuing to get that match play, that point play under my belt and with that comes confidence."
You could potentially face Caroline Wozniacki in the next round, what are your thoughts on that match up?
"It’s totally exciting to be able to play Wozniacki after watching her in the US Open Final against Serena. She has done so well in the past year, so it’s a very exciting match. Her game style is very fun to play, because it makes you play every point. She doesn’t make any mistakes. So I think that if I do play her it will be a fun match, and a good opportunity to get that point play, because she will make you play every single ball...It will be easy to overplay against someone who plays like her, so for me I just want to stay in the point and stay solid, and take advantage of the opportunities I have. I don’t want to overplay because that’s how she capitalizes on her opponents."
