Wildcard charges into second round
18-year-old Latvian Jelena Ostapenko was granted a main draw wildcard into the 2016 ASB Classic and showed organisers and spectators what she was made of on the opening day of the tournament. The former World Number Two Junior upset Johanna Larsson (ranked 56 in the world) in two sets winning the match 6-1, 7-5.
Currently ranked 84 in the world Ostapenko one to watch as she is the second youngest player inside the top 100. The 2014 Junior Wimbledon champion said she was delighted to be here in Auckland “It was a great possibility that I could receive the wildcard from the Tournament Director and I’m very thankful grateful for that. I’m very happy that I could win my first round match.”
Ostapenko is is likely to face second seed Ana Ivanovic in the second round on Wednesday. Ivanovic will need to beat her qualifying opponent in the first round tomorrow.
